The nursery was established by John Gibbs in the 1930's and specialised in alpine plants. It has been owned by Louise Baylis since 1980. Located in picturesque countryside in the hills above Macclesfield and on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the site has stunning views across the Cheshire Plain.
A half acre garden has been created around the nursery where a wide variety of different plants are displayed in woodland and open settings. Ponds, perennial borders, rockeries, sculptures and arbours combine to make a visitor attraction for all the family.
A short walk away is the historic walled garden which once belonged to the now demolished hall which gave the nursery its name. 10 000 hours of work over the last seven years has transformed this traditional and atmospheric site from wilderness to a productive vegetable and fruit garden. An orchard planted with traditional fruit trees is grazed by friendly Kune Kune pigs.
Although the nursery no longer opens to the public, the gardens are open for the National Gardens Scheme annually in summer.
